Use the Office Web Components to Browse Multidimensional Cubes

You can use the PivotTable from the Microsoft Office Web Components to browse local cubes on your computer. Microsoft allows you to download from their site a free read-only version of the Office Web Components for Office 2003, if you don't have the Web Components already installed on your computer.

The Office Web Components  provide an excellent opportunity for introducing Business Intelligence to a large number of people. Many people already have Microsoft Office 2000 or Office XP installed. They are ready for OLAP browsing. With a sample web page containing a PivotTable and a sample local cube file, they will be ready to explore the power of OLAP. They don't need to be connected to an Analysis Server or an OLAP Server.

Here are three web pages that can be used to browse a local cube. You can save them on your computer, so you can use them when not connected to the internet. You can also e-mail these web pages to a colleague along with a local cube file so that they also can browse a portion of your OLAP data.

Would you like to improve the speed of your cube browsing? Would you like your users to view OLAP data offline? You can do this with CubeSlice. We can demo CubeSlice for you, using your own cubes or with our sample cubes. Sign up for a free demo now.

Each of these web pages has a section of code where you can set the dimensions that will be shown by default for the columns, rows, and slicer. (The slicer is a dimension used for filtering. You can't use slicers with the Read-Only version.) You can also set the number of levels that are to be shown when first connecting to the local cube. You can use these web pages without modifying the code, but it is useful to do so, especially when using the read-only version of the Office Web Components for Office XP. Select  Source on the View menu in Internet Explorer and then search for the following line of code:

        'Select measures and dimensions here

If you have a local cube file, you can use it with any of these web pages.  If you don't, we have provided some sample local cube files here for download.  These local cubes are created from the FoodMart 2000 Sales sample database provided with Analysis Services. If you download the LocalCube.cub file and place it in the c:\temp directory on your machine, it will be ready to view when you go to the web page with the PivotTable.

If you would like to see your own company's data in a multidimensional cube format, but you don't have OLAP tools or expertise, try the Quick Start With Business Intelligence. Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence can be expensive, but it doesn't have to cost a lot of money to get a start with these powerful tools.

ViewCubeOWC2000.htm - For use with the Office Web Components included with Office 2000. A read-only version of these components is not available.

ViewCubeOWCXP.htm - For use with the Office Web Components included with Office XP.

ViewCubeOWCXPReadOnly.htm - This is the same as the previous file, except changes have been made in the dimensions that are displayed to fit a user that does not have a license for Office XP.

Both of the XP web pages will link to Microsoft's download site if the XP Office Web Components are not installed on the local computer accessing the page.
